Fall 2010 Class Descriptions
Make ‘Em and Race ‘Em (Grades 2 - 5; 5 - 8 ) Start your engines! Throughout the semester, we will explore Newton’s laws as we figure out how to build and perfect new racing “vehicles,” such as balloon cars, air gliders, miniature sailboats, mousetrap cars, and pine cars. Each time we’ve completed a vehicle, we’ll have races to see which is the fastest, best looking, slowest, and most creative. (Physics, Math, Problem Solving)

Ignite Your Creativity! (Grades 2 – 7) This class is a good choice for creative students who either love to write, or aren’t quite sure about writing. We will start each class with creative sparks, games, and activities to get the ideas flowing - inventing human machines, drawing group murals, making up words and definitions. Unique writing and creative problem solving activities follow, always with a twist and tailored to student age and ability levels. Students in this class will have their work published in Spirare, Ignite’s annual creative writing magazine. (Writing, Art, Playing with Words, Literature, Creative and Critical Thinking)

Creative Writing (Grades 3 – 6) This class is for you if you already love to write, or if you are interested in writing. You will be inspired by new, creative catalysts to compose poetry and stories, making your words come alive and dance off the page. You will have the opportunity to build on what you’ve already learned and write more poems, stories, and even non-fiction. All creative writers will have their work published in Spirare, Ignite’s annual creative writing magazine. (Writing, Art, Music, Literature)

Advanced Creative Writing (Grades 7 - 8) Write free verse poetry, stories, interpretive comments, fantasy, science fiction, and historical and biographical fiction in response to film, art, music, literature, photography, history, and biography. Explore the process of becoming a professional writer, learn from the experts, and hone your craft. All creative writers will see their work published in Spirare, Ignite’s annual creative writing magazine. (Writing, Art, Music, Literature, Film)

World War II Strategy, Battle Games, and Context (Grades 5 - 8) In each class, you will have a chance to explore primary sources, learn more about the context of WWII, ponder “what-ifs”, and draw your own conclusions. Then, you will try to change the history of the world as you learn and play Axis and Allies, the WWII strategy game. (History, Math Analytics, Literature)

Chemistry Extravaganza (Grades 4 - 8) Step into the Ignite Science Laboratory to explore the world of chemical reactions with scientist extraordinaire, Mrs. Buddhu. Learn what’s a reaction and what’s not; watch demonstrations; and do a hands-on experiment in every class. Bring your taste buds because a number of the chemical reactions in this class will be edible! (Chemistry, Problem Solving)

One-on-One Essay Writing (or other individualized needs) If your child needs help on the essay writing process or on a specific assignment or application essay, please contact us to schedule one-on-one sessions. Likewise, if your child is exhibiting boredom, laziness, or reticence to any academic aspect of school, please give us a call. We can work together to pinpoint the underlying issues and design a positive strategy for progress.

Details and Enrollment
Session is 12 weeks long and begins the week of Sept. 20 and ends the week of Dec. 13. No classes will be held the week of Nov. 22. Classes are $265 for the session; Chemistry Extravaganza has an additional $15 lab fee. Spots will be held upon receipt of signed forms and payment.
